Treks Ideal for the Monsoon Season

Rainy Season is the ideal season to get outside your comfort zone and experience nature at its best.
Finding shelter on a mountain and having some snacks while you rest, walking through waterfalls enroute your trek and watching the clouds from the highest point on a trek are some things that you just cannot miss. The Sahyadri Mountain range and the Baglan mountain range are the two places that offer the best trekking experiences.
Below we have listed the treks in Maharashtra which are best if done during the monsoon season.

Rajmachi - Difficulty level : Moderate
If you are reading this in the Monsoon Season and you havent been to Rajmachi ever, then I would say that just stop whatever you are doing and head to this beautiful fort.
Rajmachi is the best fort for the monsoons. After taking the exit from Lonavala, the 18km stretch to the base of the fort offers the best off-roading terrain. One thing to note is that only bikes and Suv's can take this road. If you are not sure if you will be able to drive all the way, then you can also park your vehicles and hike till the base.
The huge waterfalls, lush green valleys in the surrounding area of the fort will take your breath away.

Harishchandragad - Difficulty level : Extreme
Harishchandragad monsoon trek is ideal for folks looking for an extreme rainy season mountaineering experience.
The best season to visit this fort is during the winter season, but going in the rainy season has its own benefits. You will get to see nature at its best.
There are plenty of caves on the fort wherein you can take shelter during the rainy season. Just a simple thing like watching the rain from a cave is blissful. So if you are looking for some extreme mountaineering experience in the monsoons, then look no further... Harishchandragad is the best destination.

Sinhagad - Difficulty level : Easy
Sinhagad is recommended for folks who do not want to trek a lot and want an easy trekking experience.
Rainy season and the winter season is the most ideal time to visit Sinhagad. At the top of the fort you there are a lot of food stalls that serve Bhaji and Pitla Bhakra, which everyone should definitely try. One thing to note would be to avoid going on weekends. This fort is jam packed on weekends during the rainy season. The motorable road gets heavily jammed with cars and hence avoid going on weekends.

Lohgad - 80 Kms from Pune
Lohgad and Visapur are forts towards Lonavala. Lonavala itself is an ideal place for a quick getaway during the monsoon season.
You will get fantastic views from the top of Lohgad as most of its structure is still intact. During the rainy season, the locals set up small food outlets at the base where one can get some awesome taty Bhajis and Corn. There is ample of parking space at the base, hence this is not an issue for two wheelers or four wheelers.

Rajgad - Difficulty level : Hard
Towards the South of Pune is this mighty fort called Rajgad.
Monsoon season is the perfect time for trekking at Rajgad. The beautiful views of the surrounding valleys and the view that one gets on reaching the top is just something that cannot be described in words.
The locals serve some hot snacks at Padmavati temple on the fort. After a tiring trek in the rains, eating Bhaji and Pitla Bhakri gives you a heavenly feeling that you will not get even after dining in a five star hotel.
For more info about the route, difficulty level and camping info, check the link given below. One can also camp on the fort and the temples offer good shelter during the rains.

Torna - Difficulty level : Extreme
Torna is the highest fort in Pune district. Please note that this fort is not for novice trekkers. The trek to the top of Torna is quite difficult and requires considerable amount of stamina. One also needs to be careful while trekking as there are some spots from where a fall could lead to a major injury.
During the monsoons, you will get to see a lot of waterfalls enroute and one of them is on the trek route. If you plan for camping, you might need to take proper camping material as there is no natural shelter on the fort. There is a temple on the fort, but the ceiling of that temple is not in a good condition. So if you want some extreme mountaineering experience during the monsoons, then Torna is the best fort around Pune.

Ghangad - Difficulty level : Moderate
This is a fort that we recently discovered and were not disappointed a bit.
On all of our tours to Konkan we used to see the signboard for GHangad fort and hence on one fine weekend we decided to head there. This is without any doubt, one of the most beautiful forts located in the heart of Tamini ghat. Ghangad offers moderate level of trekking experience. We had been here in the winter season, but we believe the experience here in the monsoons shall also be equally amazing.

Trekking in the monsoon season can be challenging as the terrain gets slippery and finding dry accommodation for camping can also be a bit problematic. Do check our trekking gear categories so that you can buy the right products required for trekking during the rainy season.
